Onboarding as many people to web3 is commonly the goal with NFTs and related cryptocurrency efforts. To achieve that, we must create a welcoming space for all. Unfortunately, many times we have seen individuals and leaders in the NFT ecosystem saying offensive and misogynistic things to the community. The latest has come from FrankDegods, founder of “family friendly y00ts” brand and degods, two top collections. In a rageful tweet against fake information in the space, Frank chose to show his true character, and call women “bitches” and infer that people in the space should be “mad that they don’t get bitches” instead of targeting him with FUD. While it’s agreeable that false information is unwanted in the ecosystem, this is too much. It’s offensive to women, and it’s the wrong thing to say to young men (y00ts holders as young as 16) That their goal should be to “get bitches” and not learn and welcome others, regardless of sex, race, and related. When it was brought to Franks attention that this was offensive to women and to men, he blocked the people notifying him. I was one of those blocked. Should we trust leaders in the space who can’t have a conversation about their own failures? I for one say no. We need to do better and stand up for what is right.
So let’s promise each other to call out divisive and offensive language as we see it. It’s the only way we can truly be a welcoming space for all.
